When it comes to permanent makeup, one of the most crucial steps in the process is properly matching eyebrow pigment to the client’s skin tone. The right color match ensures that the healed result looks natural, complements the client’s features, and ages beautifully over time. Choosing the wrong pigment can lead to unnatural undertones, premature fading, or even a complete mismatch with the client’s complexion. Here’s why color matching is so important and how professionals get it right.
1. Skin Undertones Matter
Skin isn’t just light, medium, or dark—it also has underlying tones that influence how pigments heal. The three main undertones are:
Cool (Pink, Red, or Blue Undertones): These clients often need warmer pigments to balance out any coolness in the skin.
Warm (Yellow, Golden, or Olive Undertones): Warmer skin tones typically require neutral or cool-toned pigments to prevent the brows from looking too red or orange.
Neutral (A Mix of Warm and Cool Tones): These clients have the most flexibility, but a true neutral pigment works best for a balanced look.
If an artist doesn’t consider undertones, the brows may heal too ashy, too red, or even gray.

2. The Fitzpatrick Scale & Skin Type Considerations
The Fitzpatrick Scale is a tool that helps determine how different skin types react to pigment and sun exposure. This scale ranges from Type I (very fair skin that burns easily) to Type VI (deeply pigmented skin that rarely burns). Matching pigment to a client’s Fitzpatrick type ensures that the color heals properly without turning too cool, warm, or faded over time.
Additionally, clients with oily skin may need slightly darker or cooler-toned pigments since oil can cause pigments to fade faster or heal lighter than expected.
3. How Pigments Heal Over Time
Freshly applied pigments always look more intense before they heal. Over time, the color settles and can change slightly as it interacts with the client’s skin chemistry. This is why proper color selection is crucial—what looks good immediately after the procedure may not be the same after a few weeks.
Poor color matching can lead to:
Brows healing too dark or too light
Unwanted red, orange, or gray hues
A patchy or uneven appearance due to poor pigment absorption
4. The Importance of Custom Blending
A skilled artist knows that not all pigments work the same on every client. I always custom mix every color to match the clients hair color and skin tone. This means mixing different pigments to create a unique formula that complements the client’s skin tone and desired brow style.
For example:
A fair-skinned client with blonde hair may need a soft taupe shade with neutral undertones.
A client with medium olive skin may need a rich brown with cool or neutral undertones to prevent warmth from overpowering.
A deep-skinned client may require a dark brown with warm undertones to avoid the pigment healing too ashy.

5. A Natural Look vs. Harsh or Unflattering Results
Eyebrow tattoos should enhance a person’s natural beauty, not overpower their face. The wrong color choice can make brows look unnatural or even harsh. The goal is to achieve a soft, natural look that blends seamlessly with the client’s features.
A good artist takes the time to:
Assess the client’s skin tone and undertone
Use high-quality pigments designed to heal beautifully
Adjust the pigment formula as needed for the best long-term results

Color matching isn’t just about choosing a pretty shade—it’s a science that requires knowledge of skin undertones, pigment composition, and healing processes. A well-matched brow pigment enhances the face naturally, ensures longevity, and prevents common issues like discoloration or premature fading.
